Duty to Warn and Protect:  Considerations for New Jersey Psychologists

Presented by:

 Gianni Pirelli, Ph.D. ABPP

Dr. Pirelli is Board Certified in Forensic Psychology, licensed in NJ and NY, and leads the group practice:  Pirelli Clinical and Forensic Psychology, LLC (www.gpirelli.com)

In this seminar, Dr. Pirelli will address the recently amended “duty to protect and warn” law in New Jersey, 2A:62A-16, which now requires licensed practitioners, including psychologists, to notify patients’ residential police departments when said duty has been incurred.  Dr. Pirelli will review the law in the context of risk assessment principles to apply to clinical practice, particularly firearm-related considerations associated with violence and suicide risk.

Learning Objectives:

1.         List the practical responsibilities associated with NJ’s existing duty to warn and protect law, 2A:62A-16, and its most recent amendment.

2.         Describe at least one contemporary, evidence-based framework for assessing and managing risk in practice.

3.         Apply foundational concepts associated with the guns and mental health arena to your practice.

4.         Identify the emerging roles and responsibilities for NJ psychologists in the context of 2A:62A-16 and its most recent amendment €, as well as gun-related matters, more generally.

This program is intended for psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, nurses, mental health counselors, marriage and family therapists, and graduate students.
