Cognitive Behavioral Treatment of OCD in Children

Presented by:

Allen H. Weg, Ed.D

Allen Weg is Founder/Executive Director of Stress and Anxiety Services of NJ, with offices in Florham Park and East Brunswick.  He is President of OCD New Jersey, and is on the Scientific and Clinical Advisory Board of the International OCD Foundation.

OCD symptom presentation in children may appear similar to other pediatric psychiatric disorders, may manifest as other problems such as school avoidance, hostility, or social withdrawal, and can look differently than OCD in adults.  This presentation will review these differences in order to increase accurate diagnoses and treatment.  How treatment protocols can be applied to our younger clients with OCD, and consideration of boundaries and roles among therapists, parents, school personnel, and the clients themselves will be addressed.

Learning Objectives:  Participants will be able to:

1.         .Assess and diagnose OCD in children where differential diagnosis is challenging.
2.          Apply CBT protocols for adult treatment of OCD to the treatment of OCD in children.
3.          Design a pediatric OCD protocol with parent and school personnel boundaries in mind.

This program is intended for psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, nurses, mental health counselors, marriage and family therapists, and graduate students. It will. be presented at an intermediate level, meant for those with some prior knowledge of the subject matter. The presenter does not have any commercial support and/ or conflict of interest for this program.
