Cognitive Behavioral Treatment
of Chronic Pain

Chronic pain often begins with an injury. The injury heals, but the pain continues. Why does this happen? Dr. Spett will explain the most important treatments of chronic pain, including traditional CBT, operant conditioning, psychoanalytic approach, stress management, mindfulness, relaxation, biofeedback, exercise, and acceptance and commitment therapy, as well as when to use each of these interventions. Case examples of successful and unsuccessful treatments of chronic pain will be provided.
Learning objectives. At the conclusion of this workshop, attendees will be able to:
1. Assess the psychological causes of each patient’s chronic pain
2. Develop a treatment plan for each patient’s chronic pain
3. Utilize operant conditioning techniques, cognitive techniques, & behavioral techniques
4. Determine if and how exercise, mindfulness, and relaxation should be a part of treatment
