Social Anxiety: Why Cognitive Therapy is More
Effective Than Exposure

Dr. Milton Spett is the co-founder and co-leader of the New Jersey Association of Cognitive Behavioral Therapists. He has given 58 workshops on CBT for NJ Mental Health Professionals, including 16 workshops for NJPA. His private practice is in Cranford, NJ.
Exposure and response prevention (ERP) is the most popular form of CBT for anxiety disorders. But research has found that Cognitive Therapy is more effective than exposure for social anxiety. This workshop will focus on cognitive techniques that are effective in treating social anxiety, and will also explain why Cognitive Therapy is more effective that ERP for social anxiety.
Learning Objectives:
1. Describe 4 effective, common techniques for treating social anxiety.
2. Describe 2 new techniques for treating social anxiety.
3. Explain why ERP is less effective than Cognitive Therapy for social anxiety.
4. Cite research findings on adding medication to CBT for social anxiety.
This program is intended for psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, nurses, mental health counselors, marriage and family therapists, and graduate students. It will be presented at an intermediate level, meant for those with some prior knowledge of the subject matter. The presenter does not have any commercial support and/ or conflict of interest for this program.
