Sport Psychology: Understanding the Field and Application In Your Practice 


Presented by Michael Zito, PhD 


Dr. Zito is a licensed psychologist who has practiced clinical, sport and performance psychology for 30+ years. He has three Family Systems book chapters and earned his PhD in Marriage and Family Therapy.


This program will help participants understand the field of Sport Psychology and how to manage issues with athlete clients and families. Techniques for managing unrealistic expectations, parental pressures, and helping athletes focus on the true value of sports will be the focus of discussion. Sport Psychology techniques will be explained with case examples. How sport psychology interventions can be used in your own practices with or without athletes will also be addressed. 


1.     Summarize Sport Psychology practice and techniques.   

2.     Understand ways to help athlete clients and families promote the true value of sport.

3.     Appraise how to use sport psychology techniques in your practice such as visualization, controlling the controllables, the 3Ps model (present, positive and process), mind-body connection, identity management, don’t do the don’ts, and task relevant attention. 


This program is intended for psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, nurses, mental health counselors, marriage and family therapists, and graduate students. It will be presented at an intermediate level, meant for those with some prior knowledge of the subject matter. The presenter receives no commercial support and reports no conflict of interest regarding this presentation.

Dinner will be served from 6:30 – 7:00 pm, providing a chance to network with colleagues and students. The presentation will follow from 7:00 to 8:00  p.m. Payment may be made at the door by cash or check (made out to MCPA) if you did not pay online when you registered.

This program is co-sponsored by NJPA and the Morris County Psychological Association. NJPA is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education or psychologists. NJPA maintains responsibility for this program and its content. The program is approved for 1.0 CE credit. The cost of a CE Certificate is $15 for NJPA members, $25 for non-members, and free for sustaining members.
