Step-Parenting: What Works and

What Doesn’t

Presented by Tamsen Thorpe, PhD; Sharon Ryan Montgomery, PsyD; Marcy Pasternak, PhD

Dr. Thorpe and Dr. Montgomery both practice in Morristown, NJ, and Dr. Pasternak practices in Watchung, NJ. All three specialize in matters of family law, and counseling children, couples, and families going through transitions such as divorce and step-parenting.

Learning Objectives - Participants will be able to:

1. Describe step-family and restructured family dynamics

2. Recognize the unintentional consequences of step-family interactions that can contribute to parent-child contact problems (PCCP).

3. Design best practices to avoid, mitigate, and treat PCCP in step-families.


This program is intended for psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, nurses, mental health counselors, marriage and family therapists, and graduate students. It will be presented at an intermediate level, meant for those with some prior knowledge of the subject matter. The presenters receive no commercial support and report no conflict of interest regarding this presentation.

Breakfast will be from 8:30-9:00 providing a chance to network with colleagues and students. The presentation will follow from 9:00 – 10:30 a.m.  To receive CE credit, attendees must register and pay for CE credits prior to the start of the program.

This program is co-sponsored by NJPA and the Morris County Psychological Association. NJPA is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists.  NJPA maintains responsibility for this program and its content. The program is approved for 1.5 CE credit. The cost of a CE Certificate is $15 for NJPA members, $25 for non-members, and free for sustaining members.i

Refunds will be granted (less administrative fees) for cancellations received at least 24 hours prior to event start time.
