Attachment-Based Compassion Therapy for Couples
Presented by Dr. Leslie Becker-Phelps, PhD
Dr. Leslie Becker-Phelps is in private practice and treats individuals and couples through in-person and telehealth sessions. She is a speaker and a prolific writer, having authored three books, been the consultant on a fourth book and currently writing two blogs.
This talk offers a brief overview of how to use attachment theory as a framework for couples therapy especially focusing on helping patients to increase mentalization and compassionate self-awareness to heal the rift in relationships. It briefly summarizes attachment theory and some related concepts, provides a treatment overview, details the evaluation process and explores treatment interventions.
Learning Objective -- Participants will be able to:
1. Summarize attachment theory as a framework for couples therapy.
2. Recognize the importance in couples therapy of helping partners to increase their intra- and inter-personal awareness and compassion.
3. Apply interventions that improve compassionate awareness and mentalization of partners in couples, including addressing attachment-related resistances.
This program is intended for psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, nurses, mental health counselors, marriage and family therapists, and graduate students. It will be presented at an intermediate level, meant for those with some prior knowledge of the subject matter. The presenters receive no commercial support and report no conflicts of interest regarding this presentation.
