EMDR Therapy and Some Offshoots:  Brain Spotting, Flash, EMDR 2 (hybrid)

Presented by Sheila S Bender, PhD

Dr. Bender, licensed in NJ since 1977 and trained in EMDR therapy in 1994.  She has been a facilitator for the EMDR Institute of Dr. Francine Shapiro since 1995 and has seen the EMDR protocol evolve with ongoing research.  She is retired from Legacy UMDNJ (now Rutgers Biomedical and Health Science) and maintains a private practice in Morristown.

Assuming most of you already know about EMDR Therapy, we will briefly go through the 8- phase protocol; the plateaus of Safety, Responsibility, Power/Control and the newest Connection; and the need for past, present, and future when working the protocol to completion.  Then we will dip into some of the offshoots with some current research.

Learning Objective     --   Participants will be able to:

    1.     Differentiate treatment between old trauma and recent trauma, as well as encapsulated vs complex trauma.

    2.     Define the hypothesized mechanism of action in terms of re-consolidation and broaden-and-build constructs.

    3.     Incorporate the reasoning behind adding Connection and ultimately use this addition.

    4.     Describe one advantage the offshoots Brain Spotting, Flash and EMDR 2 bring to the therapy tool kit.

This program is intended for psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, nurses, mental health counselors, marriage and family therapists, and graduate students. It will be presented at an intermediate level, meant for those with some prior knowledge of the subject matter.
