The Co-Regulated Couple: How Psychophysiological Interventions Can Predict, Prevent, and Treat Relational Distress. (Hybrid)
Presented by Bridget K. Freihart, PhD
Dr. Freihart specializes in evidence-based couples therapy, sexuality, and reproductive transitions such as postpartum and menopause. As a co-founder of Gather Women and editorial board member for the Journal of Sex and Martial Therapy, Dr. Freihart’s clinical work is deeply rooted in her research on psychophysiological attunement and sexual satisfaction in romantic relationships. She is founder of Freihart Psychological Wellness, LLC.
Why do some coupes deescalate during conflict while others enter destructive loops of emotional and physical flooding? This presentation bridges contemporary couples therapy with clinical psychophysiology, describing how physiological synchrony impacts relationship longevity and sexual well-being.
Learning Objective -- Participants will be able to:
1. Differentiate Synchrony Patterns between the positive (autonomic coregulation) and the negative (flooding and distress mirroring).
2. Describe the link between physiological attunement and sexual satisfaction.
3. Identify clinical markers to pinpoint autonomic flooding in sessions and implement strategies to deescalate.
This program is intended for psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, nurses, mental health counselors, marriage and family therapists, and graduate students. It will be presented at an intermediate level, meant for those with some prior knowledge of the subject matter.
